7 East is a
24 bed medical ward
where inpatients present with a number of conditions and
illnesses including cystic fibrosis, asthma, pneumonia and other chest complaints,
epilepsy, viral/bacterial infections (meningitis, encephalitis) and
sleep disorders. Many children
in 7 East have frequent admissions for periods often longer than one week. |
|
Decisions as to which children are able to undertake school
activities in the ward or in the school classrooms are made by the Clinical
Nurse Consultant. Some students may only participate in activities for a limited
period of time and others may attend school in the classroom all day
returning to the ward only for lunch. Children with infectious illnesses are isolated
and
the ward teachers continue to service these children once cleared by medical staff. |

|
 |
An individual student's program is organised or adapted to suit,
taking into account the child's medical condition at the time. Sometimes the parents of
children who are frequently admitted, will advise the home school in advance and will
bring the child's program to hospital with them.
Children with Cystic Fibrosis are regular readmissions who present for up to two
weeks for chest 'tune ups'. Regular home school contact is maintained for these children
to ensure continuity of learning. |
