7 South is a 26 bed ward with children who are
mostly confined to beds or wheelchairs. Hospitalisation is mainly for surgery
or related conditions including orthopaedics, neurosurgery, plastics, urology and a
variety of general procedures. Some admissions are for children in need of rehabilitation
after motor vehicle accidents, head injuries, spinal injuries or brain tumours. |
| Decisions as to which children are able to undertake school
activities in the ward or in the school classrooms are made by the Clinical
Nurse Consultant. Some students may only participate in activities for
a limited period of time and others may attend school in the classroom
all day returning to the ward only for lunch. |

 |
Children who have suffered head or spinal injuries may be hospitalised
for many months. Liaising with the child's home school and encouraging classmates to make contact
through cards, letters and faxes are important aspects in assisting
recovery. |
