ADULT PUBLIC & PRIVATE HOSPITALS

  Index  | Wards

School aged students admitted to the Mater Adult Hospital (Stanley St) and Mater Private Hospital (Vulture St) are able to access the services of the teacher. The ward administrators usually inform the school that a school age student is in hospital and requires the services of a teacher. Other contact can be made through the social worker or the Clinical Nurse Consultant for each ward.

Short stay students are given revision based on their current school work  while long stay students are given work based on information from their home school.
In addition to assisting with school work the ward teacher's may also:

liaison with home schools

contribute to Case Conferences

assist with the transition of students to their home schools

Students can attend the classroom, however due to the nature of a their illnesses, the ward teacher usually visits the students in their wards. Individual programs are negotiated with the students and home school contact is maintained where possible to ensure students continue with their school work and maintain study routines. Where appropriate, research projects, assignments and school assessments are completed and then returned to the home school for marking.
